Ah Devizes the foreign land to young lads from the North East. February 1958, milk train from Darlington arriving via Bristol Temple Meads. The lovely welcome by the NCOs, the haircut, my local barber did a "above the ears is yours below is mine" routine the day before but they still took more off. The Teddy Boy, he was signing on a regular who arrived on the Wednesday and was allowed to keep his drapes/DA hair until Thursday. Intake 5804 the group photo is a little tattered now, L/Cpl Wallace 2nd Lt. Tyler Cpl Hanthingy, as we were his last intake our sgt skived off most of the time. Spent some time in B company office as I applied to be a regular had a medical near Aldershot, failed , got my pick of postings wound up in Newcastle RPO RASC, 2 years of enjoyment, would not have missed it for the world.

Arrived at Devizes on 29th June 1954, a date that is burned in my brain. Can't show my army number as I use it as my password as that is also burned in my brain. Did basic training then went on to the Regular Recruits training (I did 3 years). Was at Nottingham office for a short period then went out to Singapore and Malaya. Never been back to Devizes but just might go early next year as the Rugby Club I support are in the same league as Devizes this season. Back in 1954 I lived in Leeds. On our first leave the coach from Devizes took 14 hours to get to Leeds. Used to meet up with several RAPC guys I served with in Singapore, sadly only three of us left now.

I served at the Training Centre from 1956 to 1958. I was in Intake 192, C.P.C. "A" Company and Wally Melville was the L/Cpl. for our platoon. I became a C.P.C. instructor in "A" Company for the rest of my service. Wally and I became good friends, and I remember Bill Irons. I also remember Paul Turner and also quite a number of other people at the training centre. In 1962 I got married and my wife and I emigrated to Canada. We now live in California and my email is kenscarisbrick@sbcglobal.net. I would like to hear from other R.A.P.C. members who may have known me.

I was at Waller Barracks Devizes on the dreaded training course from March 1950 ( Remember the great QMS Buck Taylor (Now deceased) I'll have your bloody guts for garters' and so on. We thought it was hell unleashed at the time, but it made men of us ( and trained killers) After training I was posted over the Rd. to RPO REME. Prince Maurice Barracks. where I spent the rest of my two years NS. as a Lance jack in charge of barrack room ?. My best buddy L/Cpl Mick Abbott, In charge of the next barrack room,I have never been able to trace, despite using all channels available.I remember he came from Leytonstone Essex .If anyone out there can help me I would be over the moon. I am 82 now, so maybe he has passed to higher glory. Who knows? I have lots on memories, mostly good, of all my lads from all over the UK. Lots more I can tell, but it could be a long tirade. Also have many photos. I do know that I will never forget the great comradeship. (I also worked with a Sgt Pam Bray (WRAC) Lucky lad!) so there's another one to trace if anyone can help. Ex L/Cpl. 22348527 17 platoon B Company. 47 intake 50-06 group. that's me. I see by your army number that we were in the same Devizes intake. I was 22348525 19 Platoon B Company 47 intake(23 March 1950). I wonder whether those who ask "Did you do time at Devizes?" receive "Primrose & Blue" the official seasonal publication of the RAPC Regimental Association which is distributed to members of the Association. In each edition there are numerous entries from past ex-Devizes members including platoon photographs and other photographs of interest. In case you haven't found it yet the official Association website is www.rapc.co.uk. It is well worth a visit and worthwhile becoming a member of the Association.
I have been an RAPC Reg Ass'n member for many years and have had a few memories and photo's published in P & B including inquiries re Mick Abbott. Also many websites, but to no avail. Have even visited the Leytonstone blog, but no success there either. Why did I not ask for his address upon our demob day.

Yes I was at Waller Barracks May 1955 162 Intake for 10 weeks the start of my NS was the shock of my life but it did a great job of preparing you for the rest of your life, I’ve never regretted it. Now 82 and still in good health I often think of the training staff who dod such a good job of taking a stupid young man and turning him into a proper citizen Sgt. MacCullock comes to mind he had such a raw Scottish accent we couldn’t understand him most of the time, but the pride he instilled in us was something else. Happy and great days.

New Kids on the Block is my favourite pop-band of 90s. They had so many hits! The ones I remember are 'Tonight', 'Baby, I Believe In You' and their hit 'Step By Step'. These are real masterpieces, not garbage like today! And it is awesome they have a tour in 2019! So I'm going to attend New Kids on the Block concert in 2019. The concert dates is here: New Kids on the Block tour Philadelphia. Check it out and maybe we can even visit one of the performances together!
